For a reason - The Day it Began - February 8th, 2018
This is where the journey of a lifetime began. A day in which the universe did its thing and connected the dots in the places it needed to be. Who would of known a word of advice from an uber driver, an elevator ride, and taking a chance would get me where I am today.
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Noah Carr. I am 21 years old and was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I'm the youngest of 5 and was raised by a single mother who is my absolute heart and soul. I'm currently attending the University of Utah getting my bachelors degree in Marketing with a minor in Entrepreneurship. I have just finished my third year and only have about 6 classes left. College has been an incredible experience for me thus far. I didn't really know what to expect coming into it because none of family has gone past the high school level. I found my grounding through the First Ascent Scholars Program and my fraternity Beta Theta Pi. Without either of those I wouldn't be where I am today and what happened on February 8th would of never of been a possibility.
My entire life I have always dreamt of doing big things and being able to provide for my family. It's something I hold true to my heart and the reason I work so hard. Money has always been a serious struggle for my family, and its what taught me my work ethic at a young age. When you grow up the way I did, you recognize there are only so many opportunities that life presents you with. It is your responsibility to take those opportunities and run with them. Which is exactly what happened when I walked into that elevator of the columbia tower and met my future mentor.
It all started with an early morning flight from my hometown of Salt Lake to Seattle. My fraternity flies out all of our Vice Presidents for a leadership conference called Keystone which takes place in Seattle for the Northwest. We came out a day early to come and experience a little of Seattle before we were in meetings for the rest of the weekend. We landed, got our ubers and headed to our air bnb. Shortly after getting situated and dropping our things off we headed straight back to the city even though all of us were suffering from sleep deprivation from pulling all nighters to guarantee we'd make our flight. On the way into the city our uber driver asked us what we'd be doing for the day. We mentioned we had no real plans other than walking around the city and sight seeing. He told us we had to go to the columbia tower, the tallest building in Seattle. He said it has the best view and it would be much cheaper and less of a wait than the space needle. We loved the idea and told him we'd check it out. After a few hours of exploring the city we ended up at the Columbia Tower. We got to the 40th floor, grabbed a coffee, and hopped onto the second elevator going to the observatory. Walking in behind us was a man and woman. They press the "Members Only" that goes to the 75th floor of the club. I quickly asked, "What does it take to be a member?" after a quick laugh I started speaking to a woman named Katrina Eileen. She invited us to the club for a tour. After chatting for some time and all of us picking our jaws up from the floor it was time to say our goodbyes. I thanked them for the tour and said how awesome it was to meet them. As I began walking towards the elevator, something told me to go back and get their information. I turn around, gather up some courage and ask for their business cards. Joe Candelario (a broker for Katrina) handed me his card, and Katrina says she unfortunately didn't have one on her. I say "thats fine, how about I grab your number?". After another quick laugh she gives me her number and the rest is history.
After about 3 days and several hours of nagging my friends about this incredible story. I gathered up the words saying how crazy it was that we ran into each other and how it was meant to be that we ran into each other. I told her my story and how much I'd love for her to be my mentor. After a few anxious hours of waiting, I received a text saying she feels that we met for a reason as well and she'd be happy to mentor me.
It started slow, but I continued to reach out and there was no way I was going to let this opportunity pass. Katrina and I have such a similar energy and she's a believer just like me. I knew that if I were to find a way to come out to Seattle it would change my life.
After a continuation of reaching out and staying persistent, things began to start moving. We had several Zoom calls with members of her team and we began to mold the experience for the summer. We booked a one way flight from Salt Lake City, Utah to Seattle on May 10th and that is where the journey begins.
Stay tuned for weeks 1-4.
After that, I'll have daily blogs uploaded
